Ok, here is how it went.

DL'd and installed Celestia. Liked it ALOT!. Tried to think of a way to create a domed movie screen to shoot the projector in to. Then tried to think of a way to make it real 3d.

Then installed Stellarium.. .. ..

It completely blew my socks of..

As an amateur star gazer I have owned my telescope for about 5 years http://cgi.ebay.com/DS-80ATE-refractor- ... otohosting
I always seem to Star Gaze in spurts with long gaps. So sometimes it gets shelved for for awhile and I forget stuff and the books are so stale. This program is openSource and utterly perfect for the ametuer. With a laptop I can gaze on just about anything in the sky with my latop next to me.

I'm so stoked to bring this up to the cape with my laptop and my telescope. Dude I'm indebted to you for sharing this.

My wife teaches astronomy in 4th grade in Colts Neck, NJ and she is going to be so floored when she gets home.

Thanks WG!

Celestia is great also but its problem is its complexity. After a few minutes of zooming around and looking at different stuff, I found my self wanting to do more. But not knowing how..

Stellarium keeps it simple with a great interface. For use with a laptop in the field with a telescope, its ease of use was a big difference. Plus ithas the really cool nightvision mode..
