I put in a few hours last night, love it so far... I'm flying the USS Reaver as Sho'nuf, going to be on a little this afternoon and probably tonight late (23:00 or so).

Only an Lt 5 right now I think, did the fleet action to rescue that station from the Klingons... Massive space battles rule, learned the hard way not to try and solo a battle cruiser in my dinky little ship.

What's your handle? Your character is Sho'nuf@"something". We can search for you with both your character and handle.

Maybe we should do this a different way. We could plan an outing, more for getting people familiar with the interface, understanding the mission structure, and some mission fun too.

Then we can plan the fleet.

Do we have a NJLP Mailing list or something?

I'm a Captain too. I finally got my Defiant.

I noticed a change in the game. When we used to team up and try to help some of the guys at the lower ranks, the game would spawn enemies to match the level of the highest player. And that would be a problem cause the guys at the lower levels(who we were trying to help) would get pulverized rather quickly.

When I went to try out my Defiant I joined an enemy signal contact in the Sirius Sector, and the game did not spawn any enemies that were my level. All the enemies were lower levels as they should be.

So now it looks like we can team up regardless of level. I just thought that was good news.

Re: StarTrek Online Discovery

Post by Digger[NJLP] »

Hey all,
Made a bit of a discovery the other day, in some respect its good to know or it may just piss you off.

You should all be familiar with the enemy contact instances that float around each sector. They are usually used in the "Defend the Sector" missions.

Well I entered one in the Romulan sector the other day and joined forces with 2 other Commanders. We were all about the same level and as it happened to be, our ships were cruiser, science, and attack so overall a good combo. Problem was every enemy group in the sector had NPCs flying a Captain level ship 12 levels above us. Needles to say we got hammered, after our third obliteration, out of the blue shows up to admirals in their ships and within 10 minutes we were done. So with only one more of those eliminate 9 groups of bad guys I waited around for the instance to reset.
The admirals never left but they sunddenly take off and head away from the "battle" area and disappear into the distance, so with time on my hands I follow. So after a while I notice I'm heading to the corner of the map and 12 ships pop up all huddled in to the corner. I hail them private message them no one replies. I then look at the social menu and look to see who is in the instance with me and to my surprize there are 20 people in the instance. Then I notice the 12 people who are here in the corner are all in the same fleet. I also notice that atleast 3 or 4 of them are ensigns.

So then it dawns on me, the instances themselves once created in theory never go down. As long as someone is in them they just keep recycling. Problem is after each completion, the system adds enemies with a strength based on the number of people and their level in the instance.

So now I start experimenting and I'm joining instances left and right. There were some that were just the people who warped in with me, but the majority of them had these "leechers" who just sit far away from battle and earn point, credits, and accomplish missions without doing anything.

I also realized a lot of these people are fleet members just leveling up members.

Its an obvious issue because I spoke with one of the GM's and they are aware of the problem. But since its the way the instance engine was built, they are not sure how to fix it.

So you can be a leech and earn credits and points with out doing anything or you can play the game they way it was intended to be played.

A lot of people post that they became admiral in the first week or you may know some that seem to be rocketing through levels. Unless they are spending 12 to 14 hours a day in game they are probably doing just this. In fact in WoW there was and still is a similar issue. But lets say you get one of those cool little apps that sends a keystroke to the game so you never time out of the game. Then you could sign-in to the game, join one of the instances, fly your ship to a corner and walk away from your PC for the next 24 hours. By the time you come back you would be the next grade level, because you would keep earning points as the instance resets and people do the battle job for you.

Its a crappy way to play the game but its an exploit...

Also, after talking to the GM, an instance that is new, will generate NPCs based on who is in the instance. In the case of the roaming enemies each time you complete the task the instance restarts and will base the new enemies on the players in the instance.

Nice find Digger. Maybe my observation was in error. I entered a sirius sector battle and all the enemies were Lt level, much lower than me. Maybe it was because the instance was already started. Darn I was hoping, to be able to help out murdock, war ghoul, and harlock with my main character. I'll have to do more research.

Just posted this in my other thread about fleet names. I figure more people are subscribed to this thread and will see it:

So I'm really looking forward to creating the fleet just for the fact that we can have a shared fleet bank. We've just been running into problems because we have to have 5 people online in a team to create a fleet. I found a solution to this. Apparently, you can just ask for help on the general chat in spacedock. People can just join your team temporarily so you can create the fleet and then you politely kick them. I'm going to try this next time I'm online.

That way we can all join the fleet at our own time.

I was going to name the fleet NJLP for obvious reasons. We can use the logo Murdock has for our fleet logo as well.

I'm going to try this later tonight, if anyone has any other name suggestions let me know.

Oh Jim...only you...

That's not what I was planning to do, and I don't think it was very nice. Funny, just not nice.

thanks for the heads up though. I'll make sure not to put anything in the bank until we kick the people out of it.
