New MythTV System, Bumpy Start, New To Linux

Post by NILL »

I just put together a MythTV system because I want a way to archive my DVD collection, watch video podcasts, and what ever else I find online. If I can record tv shows also thats great, but it'll wait till the other stuff is set up, else thats what netfilx is for.

This is my second attempt at putting together a MythTV system. My first was with budget hardware that turn out wasn't compatible with the still early in development software. This time around I closely but not exactly copied the specs from a prebuilt system called the Dragon v2.0 http://mythic.tv/product_info.php?products_id=44. Normally costing $1,157.00 I got the hardware for $600.00. Not counting a free power supply and the case from my last attempt.

Specs
OS version R5F1 http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html
Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813121052
CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115005
Video http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125041
RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145568
Harddrive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822148140
DVD ROM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827135151
PSU http://www.ultraproducts.com/product_de ... ductID=467
Case http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/tenor/
Remote http://www.pcalchemy.com/product_info.p ... ucts_id/35

I'm going to list my problems and and update this post as things get fixed.

1. Fixed No volume. MythTV shows the volume being maxed. Fixed it self. That was strange.

2. FIXED Can't Telnet into the system. (Wrong IP; Telnet isn't turned on, SSH is)

3. FIXED Can't FTP/SMB into the system. Had to return Samba to defaults, then start it up

These are the three major problems. If I can get them fixed I maybe able to fix the minor problems myself. The reason im posting hear is that I think you guys my have a little more pations for me than a Linux forum.

EDIT I'm adding this to my orginal post to make it more visible.
One other place I'm getting help. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=92180

What are you using for Video Capture?
The article mentions a Hauppauge WinTV model 401 w/ dbx..

I decided to hold up on capturing live TV. I don't watch much anyways. If I did I would really like to do a straight digital recording using cable. Some cable boxes have a firewire port in the back of them that use can use to record from. You can even use it to control what channel the cable box is on.

If can't use the firewire port theres this HDMI video capture card that got released last year. Theres no linux drivers for it yet but work is being done.
